2011 Drumming 4World Rhythms
World Rhythms come to Royston. Try your hand at three different types of percussion all in one morning: Carribean steelpans, African djembe and South American samba. No previous experience needed. Age 10-adult. Pre-book.

2013 Programme: batikBatik
This workshop will provide an introduction to the  batik process. Participants will explore the traditional tools used as well as modern applications of wax to create marks and textures on paper and fabric. At the end of the workshop you should have a selection of experimental samples on paper, in addition to a square of fabric as your example of  a completed batik. Information about the dyes and terms used will also be provided. Age 12-adult. Pre-book.

About the workshop leader: Sandra Scott is a textile artist who lives and works in Cambridge. She works with many different age groups and abilities and enjoys sharing her knowledge and experiences about textiles and art with others. She creates in her back garden studio where she enjoys drawing, making quilts and experimenting with new ideas and materials. She sometimes creates batik fabrics and papers which she uses in her work. She enjoys the fluid lines of the traditional tools and the beautiful textures which can be achieved when using the wax, as well as the delightful colours obtained from the mixing of the dyes. 2013 Programme: JS WattsPoetry writing: evoking place
Local writer and poet J.S.Watts explores ways of evoking/establishing a sense of place in your poetry. The workshop will look at different ways of conjuring up the essence of a place in words, explore specific examples of how other writers have done it, offer assorted prompts and ideas and provide space for participants to try techniques for themselves. However experienced or inexperienced a poet you are, expect to write something new on the day or bring a piece of work that you want to work with. Age 14-adult. Pre-book.

About the workshop leader: J.S.Watts was born in North West London and now lives and writes near Cambridge in East Anglia. She attended Burlington Girls Grammar School in White City, London, read English at Somerville College, Oxford and spent many years working in the education sector. She has been Poetry Reviews Editor for Open Wide Magazine and Poetry Editor for Ethereal Tales. She has published two volumes of poetry, Cats and Other Myths and Songs of Steelyard Sue (Lapwing Publications) and a novel, A Darker Moon (Vagabondage Press). www.jswatts.co.uk

2013 Programme: Colin BlumenauRoutes into theatre
A workshop examining how to contemplate and prepare for a career in the professional theatre. There are a great many actors in this country. Far too many for the work available. This workshop and Q+A will give an honest appraisal of the challenges ahead for any aspiring performer.Age 14-adult. Pre-book.

About the workshop leader: Colin Blumenau is a freelance director and writer for the theatre. In 2012 after 16 years as Artistic Director of the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds he left to develop his own freelance career. His early career was as an actor, most notably as PC ‘Taffy’ Edwards in the long running TV programme The Bill. www.colinblumenau.com

2013 programme: flower workshopSmall flower arrangements
Create a floral arrangement in a clear dish to enjoy at home. Just bring a strong pair of scissors and an apron if you would like to protect your clothes. Materials provided. Age 12-adult.

About the workshop leader: Helen Allen has many years’ experience in floral design with her creations appearing in international magazines. She won ‘student of the year’ for her ANC floristry exam. She teaches floral design and flower arranging to many different groups and  ‘Verdila flowers’  keeps her busy  with freelance work, including weddings especially in the summer months. www.facebook.com/verdilaflowers
